A Distortion of Real Life
This third of three articles on the ubiquitous Facebook social site was originally published in the online newsletter Best Practices for Adventist Ministry. Although it was designed to keep ministers out of trouble when using the social site, there are things in this article that can be applied to all of our sharing. – Rodney Walker
You all know that Facebook has amazing social influence. Facebook and other social media venues have the ability to build relationships, and also destroy them; to tear down friendships, or build them up. I’ve met a lot of people with life-changing testimonies about how a single post, a 140 character twit or a status update, has had a significant influence in their lives. Bible verses, quotes, testimonies, prayer requests are everywhere found within the Facebook aquarium. Yet, as pastors and leaders, we need to be aware of the communication distortions Facebook creates, or we will be distorted by them.
First, many of your “friends” will confuse your timeline wall with who you truly are. That would be a terrible mistake for their part. Yet, you can not prevent that from happening. Second, Facebook smoothes our self at home, work, office, soccer field into a single generic extruded product. We know that life is not as straightforward as a Facebook timeline. It has many more facets than that. Finally, Facebook conveys a precise stiff, crude prototype of what people are. It herds everybody into the same oversized room with only one kind of relationship: friendship. We need to have these three distortions in mind before tapping the “share” button on our IPhones.
I do believe that just as social media has the power to destroy, it has the power to create and empower. The results of our relationship with social media depend totally in our hands. In the end, it will be a part of our lives whether we want it to be or not.
Though Mark wants you to share, I suggest that pastors need to carefully and thoughtfully care what they share for it is easier to cope with a bad conscience than a bad reputation. To paraphrase the preacher of Ecclesiastes, “Better is a good reputation than”… a pretty timeline.

Care What You Share!
This second of three articles on the ubiquitous Facebook social site was originally published in the online newsletter Best Practices for Adventist Ministry. Although it was designed to keep ministers out of trouble when using the social site, there are things in this article that can be applied to all of our sharing. – Rodney Walker
by Pablo Gaitan, Senior Pastor, South Gate church, Southern California Conference
Facebook has made the cyber life a social one. That is helpful but simultaneously dangerous. The internet was built to move information around. Nevertheless Mark, genially, created Facebook with the purpose of transmitting human relationships. Facebook, by nature, moves us to share our lives with our “friends.” We build friendships, upgrade them or downgrade them through it. We express our feelings, expose our opinions, and expand our lives from the “real” world to the digital one.
There are two dangers in the share-ability genius of Facebook. First, your almost 1,000 friends (the FB average is around 500) are way more than the few real friends you actually have. (In a 2004 study, the average American had only 2 close confidants, and 1 in 4 said they had none). In Facebook, we live inside of a network of people, (from the past and present, from a close distance and far away), who, after you click the “share” button, become part of your story. Like it or not, your comments, updates, pics, locations update, timeline and “likes” all help people form an opinion and a description about you. Pastors are public figures, and opinions about their character are generated from all sources, one of which is now Facebook.
Second, Facebook’s share-ability has nudged us to the point where we are “hemorrhaging data”, sharing excessively with the world. Not all of what happens to you has a shareable nature. There are compelling reasons to want to prevent some information from being shared. It could actually happen that instead of being forced to share, we will not stop ourselves from sharing – that we, willingly and compulsively, violate our own privacy.
Once we were taught “Sharing is caring”. Here, in my humble opinion, I believe we need to “Care what we share”.

Mark Zuckerberg Wants You to Share
This first of three articles on the ubiquitous Facebook social site was originally published in the online newsletter Best Practices for Adventist Ministry. Although it was designed to keep ministers out of trouble when using the social site, there are things in this article that can be applied to all of our sharing. – Rodney Walker
by Pablo E. Gaitan, Senior Pastor, South Gate church, Southern California Conference
I want to talk about the relationship between social media and us, pastors. Specifically, I want to call your attention to three characteristics of social media avenues (especially Facebook), which have the potential to build up your ministry, or tear it down forever: the inevitability, the share-ability, and the ability of Facebook.
Facebook, today, is inevitable. Its inevitability is shaping the life of this age. It is shaping the way people do life. We all are being shaped by it. You included. We are being drawn into a social revolution. In fact, you and me are part of the last generation who will remember life before social media. Because, along with Mark Zuckerberg-or rightly said-thanks to him, we have entered to an age where the social fabric of life has been modified once and forever by Facebook (forever by Facebook (or its social networking associates Twitter, Foursquare, MySpace, etc.)
These days, Facebook is a “permanent fact of our global social reality.” It has more than 800 million users worldwide with 200 millions in the US alone—half of whom visit their page at least once a day. Of millennials (ages 18-29), 75% have created a profile on a social networking site. From these demographics, 48% check Facebook as their first mission of the day. Ridiculous? Mind-blowing; a generation totally wired. With these numbers, chances are your church members are Facebook’s users, too. In my former church, 97% of my people were part of Facebook. I cannot recall a pastor under the age of 40 who does not have a Facebook profile. One more last example about Facebook’s reach: A group of young adult pastors of Southern California Conference planned an event for our millennials. We did not have a large budget; therefore, we cut our expenses by not printing hard copies of our promotion items. We publicized it only through Facebook and social media three weeks before our event. The turn out? 1200 people showed up. Crazy! Free. Quick. Effective.
The bigger Facebook gets, the harder it will be to say, no to the authentically wonderful things it brings—and its undesirable components as well, which we’ll talk about in the next issue.

Accidentally Vegan, Part 1
Grocery stores, markets, and supermarkets carry a large number of items that are vegan, and a large number of items that you may not realize are vegan. There are faux franks; veggie burgers; chicken-free chicken patties; flavored and unflavored soy, almond, and rice milks; nondairy ice cream; and other delicious snacks are available for vegetarians and vegans. There are also a vast array of chips, dips, soups, cookies, candies, frozen pies, pastas, and other delectable foods that are also vegan.
Just check the ingredients of some items as you as you walk the aisles of your local market and you will understand. You will find some of the items you wish could eat as a vegan or vegetarian are actually vegan. Did you know that Pepperidge Farm Turnovers, Murray Butter Cookies, and Cracker Jacks are vegan?
Just a couple of words of caution are in order however. First, the items listed only apply to food items in the United States. Second, food manufacturers are liable to change the ingredients of a foodstuff at any time so be sure to check the label before you make a purchase.
This post will deal with dry breakfast foods and beverages. Subsequent posts will deal with snacks, condiments, baked goods, refrigerated and frozen foods, baking, and staples.

Definition of Channel
Channel, a noun, is a path or link through which information passes between two devices. A channel can be either internal or external to a microcomputer.
In communications, a medium for transferring information. Depending on its type, a communications channel can carry information (data, sound, and/or video) in either analog or digital form. A communications channel can be a physical link, such as the cable connecting two stations in a network, or it can consist of some electromagnetic transmission on one or more frequencies within a bandwidth in the electromagnetic spectrum, as in radio and television, or in optical, microwave, or voice-grade communication.
Also a single color within a digital color space. For example, the RGB color space contains three channels—red, green, and blue—and all colors within the RGB color space are created with a combination of one or more of those three color channels. In CMYK there are four channels—cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. Color management and graphics applications rely on control and manipulation of individual color channels.

Definition of Year 2000 Problem
Year 2000 problem, a noun and a compound word, was prior to January 1, 2000, a potential software problem stemming from the use of two digits (99) rather than four (1999) as year indicators in computer programs. Such programs assumed that 19 preceded every year value, and so could potentially fail or produce incorrect calculations by interpreting the year 2000 (00) as an earlier date than 19xx when the year rolled over into a new century. The use of two-digit year indicators was prevalent in, though not limited to, older programs that had been written when a saving of two bytes (digits) per year value was significant in terms of computer memory. Because the use of two-digit year indicators was widespread, companies, governments, and other organizations took measures on a large scale to prevent the Year 2000 problem from affecting their computing systems. In the end, however, the problem—luckily—proved largely uneventful.

Definition of Censorship
Censorship, a noun, is the action of preventing material that a party considers objectionable from circulating within a system of communication over which that party has some power. The Internet as a whole is not censored, but some parts of it come under varying degrees of control. A news server, for example, often is set to exclude any or all of the alt. newsgroups, such as alt.sex.* or alt.music.whitepower, which are unmoderated and tend to be controversial. A moderated newsgroup or mailing list might be considered to be “censored” because the moderator will usually delete highly controversial and obscene content or content that is on a different topic from that followed by the newsgroup. Online services have identifiable owners, who often take some share of responsibility for what reaches their users’ computer screens. In some countries, censorship of certain political or cultural Web sites is a matter of national policy.
